Sporting Glory
Sporting Glory was an exhibition held at the Victoria and Albert Museum of over four hundred national sporting trophies, including the F.A. Cup, the Ashes, the Wimbledon trophies and the British Open claret jug. MJDA were appointed to produce and install the exhibition. This involved, at the outset, developing, in conjunction with the V&A’s conservation department, the design of the large number of display cases needed to house the trophies. The layout of the exhibition then evolved around the cases.
The exhibition was partly about the history and craft of the silversmith, but also about the great sporting achievements symbolised by the trophies, and the merit of the exhibition was that it managed to be both these things and to satisfy a wide range of tastes.
One of the legacies of Sporting Glory was a new trophy specially commissioned for the exhibition which was to become rugby union's Six Nations’ Championship Trophy, an eight foot high replica of which featured prominently at the entrance to the exhibition.
